Day 13 - Gatlinburg, TN to Gordonsville, VA

Road Trip!  This is pretty how we spent much of our day.  The trip from Gatlinburg to Gordonsville (just outside of Charlottesville) is one of the longest drives we will have until it's time to come home.  It consisted of filling up the Swagger Wagon's tank and, alternately, emptying the family's tanks.

One of the things we wanted to do on this trip was to take time out just to enjoy each other.  So, we pulled over along the way to stretch our legs and hit a city park in Roanoke.

Besides the playground, we had baseball and frisbee throwing distance contests.  It was evident we don't spend enough time doing stuff like this.  I gotta think I could throw a frisbee by our kids' age -- but the whole concept seemed pretty foreign to them.

The drive was a nice one.  We could see noticeable differences between the Smoky and the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Where the Smoky Mountains were fairly rugged, the Blue Ridge mountains were gentler with fertile valleys between them.  Obviously, it was this fertile farmland that made the Virginians such wealthy farmers of tobacco and other cash crops.

The highlight of the day was a visit to the University of Virginia campus (why does everyone call it UVA and not UV?)   I had studied in college how SMU's campus was master planned and based on that of UVA.  (In fact it's primary building, Dallas Hall, is modeled after Jefferson's Rotunda on the UVA campus).  So, it was something we were pretty excited to see.  It oozed history and academia.  Though, to the kids, it was just a great place to run and play.

Finally, after 8 plus hours in the truckster, we arrived in Gordonsville at last -- ready to find out what a "yurt" is.
